  • Gold mining community in Tanzania

This is a quick glimpse of what I experienced in Geita, Tanzania, in September 2009. I'm doing supervisory training at the gold mine at Geita - it is such an institution in Tanzania it is depicted on the new 5000 Tanzania shilling bill. A South African and a Namibian took mercy on me on a Saturday and decided to show me the sights. We also saw the awful ringbarking of trees - totally unaware local population who use the bark to make beehives - in the process they kill the trees that attract the bees. Also saw independent miners - manually chopping away at the gold bearing orr on the other side of the hill, then loading a bag full of this stuff onto the back of a bicycle and WHEELING it into Geita town some 20Kms away, where there's a small independent smelter. These are people who liv...

  • Historic Gold Mine & Mill Deep In The Forest – Part 1

This mine was once made up of several smaller claims and the earliest records I can find on those date back to 1867. However, by the turn of the last century (1900), these appear to have all been consolidated into the large operation seen in the video. Given the large number of adits and trenches, the number of collapsed structures (I only showed a small number of them in the video), the large stamp mill and the need for a cemetery, this was obviously a significant mining community during its heyday. The guys I explored this site with are the Gold Country Explorers and credit goes to them for locating it. Gold Country Explorers find and post pictures of some really awesome places. Here are a few of the creepiest abandoned towns. Some are ancient lifeless locations and some are towns with violent pasts. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 10. St. Thomas, Nevada This original mormon settlement was abandoned when the government bought the land. With the construction of the Hoover Dam, this city was going to get flooded. The city was completely submerged by water at one point, then when Lake Mead began to diminish, St. Thomas eventually saw sunlight once again. It’s a quick trip from Las Vegas and you can see if yourself if there are truly ghosts or not. 9. Hashima Island, Japan Hashima Island was one of the most densely populated islands in the world and is located about 6 miles from Nagasaki. The workers here mostly made their money from coal mining and helped Japan become a modern country in the Industrial age. The highest population recorded here was 5,259 people in 1959. As soon as the coal was depleted, the mines closed their doors and the workers needed a new form of income. This island currently listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in July 2015, ensuring its preservation. 8. Salton Riviera, California The Salton Sea was once a very popular tourist destination for people looking to enjoy some fresh water and warm weather. It rose as one of California’s vacation hotspots in the 1950’s but the reason why people left can be considered as a huge environmental blunder. In the 1970’s the town began to lose clientele due to supposed pollution and an extreme rise in salt . You can still see the apocalyptic remains if you don’t mind the pungent smell. 7. Animas Forks, Colorado Another desolate gold mining town in Colorado, this town was abandoned in the 1920’s. The first cabin built in this settlement was in 1873 and eventually became a bustling mining community. The residents most likely left due to the inhospitable weather and frequent snow storms that buried the town. It’s still visited today but you’ll need to bring either a snow mobile of an off-road vehicle. 6. Goldfield, Arizona When you think of a classic American ghost town, Goldfield, Arizona should exactly what comes to mind. Another American mining town, this one dates back to the 1890’s and is still well-preserved like it was in the wild wild west. It’s still an extremely popular tourist attraction especially to those in the Phoenix area. The old town still puts on reenactments of duels so it almost doesn’t feel like a ghost town at all, just a flash from the past. 5. Kolmanskop, Namibia Africa is home to their own ghost towns as well. With discoveries of diamonds and other rare resources, small towns were built to keep up with supply and demand for these sought after jewels. This Ghost town was originally built to house miners that were found in this desert. German miners flocked to this area, hoping to strike it rich. The town began to diminish in population after world war 1. The site is popular for photographers who enjoy the way the houses look buried under sand 4.UFO Houses in San Zhi, Taiwan These bizarre looking homes were built to attract tourists and people seeking futuristic looking houses. The only problem was that the person who financed the project became bankrupt and could complete most of them. The village went unfinished and without a proper infrastructure, no one decided to move there. There are rumors that is city is haunted and there have been skeleton discovered in the area. 3. Bodie California This haven for gold seekers during the gold rush grew to a population of 8,5000 people and had over 2,000 buildings constructed at one time. A huge fire swept, destroyed many of these building and on top of it the gold mines were beginning to become depleted. So guess what did! They left! A combination of fire and no gold usually means people don’t have any more reason to stick around,. 2. Deception Island, Antarctica Deception Island is built extremely close to an active volcano so you can probably already guess why people left. Norwegians attempted to settle on this cold continent in order to hunt whales in 1906. Once a huge volcanic eruption destroyed most of the colony, it was difficult to continue living there. So in 1969, they decided maybe this wasn’t a great place to live after all. 1.Pripyat. Ukraine This city was founded by the soviet union and gets its name from the Pripyat River, in Ukraine. Once the Chernobyl meltdown took place the city was evacuated immediately. The city is left behind with people most personal belonging and it’s as if everyone vanished from thin air. This was a bustling city at the time and had a population of 49,000 people before the disaster. There were over 15 schools for children, malls, cafes everything one would need. It was the ideal soviet city at its time but the source of power became its destroyer. Now nature takes over the land like it did before people lived here.

These are people who live on the fringes: they work harder than most, every day, and remain in abject poverty due to igorance, corruption, disease. AIDS is rife in the area, I'm told, although the gold mining company I'm contracted to does a lot to educate and otherwise equip people about malaria and HIV/AIDS.

A people speak out for their river, and for their future. The Hidden Valley gold and silver mine in the Morobe Province is affecting communities living along the Watut River, a long and fast-flowing river in the lush mountains of Papua New Guinea. In this evocative and beautifully shot short documentary we hear how indigenous models of development are clashing with those imposed by mining companies and government when they are not listening to local landowners. “Is this development for the benefit of local people or for the shareholders in Australia and South Africa?” – Howard Sindana in Hidden Valley. We hear from a diverse range of local community representatives, community workers and landowners including Reuben Mete from the Union of Watut River Communities and from Dr. Gavin Mudd, an environmental engineer, as they describe the impacts of this jointly Australian - South African owned mine as well as the way forward to a more sustainable future. Premiered at on 5th September 2013 at the Environmental Film Festival Melbourne, Australia. More films about the Philippines: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/philippines/ - The use of child labour in the Philippine’s Paracale, or ‘Goldtown’, is widespread - Extracting gold involves diving into mud-filled shafts and using toxic mercury - Poverty and lack of alternative jobs force people into this highly dangerous work - Many die young due to work accidents or breathing problems, others develop chronic illness The Philippines’ town of Paracale was dubbed “Goldtown” for its rich deposits of the precious metal. Despite government attempts to regulate mining, illegal pits are still commonplace. They lack even the most basic health and safety and workers are exposed to toxic mercury fumes. Dirty water causes skin diseases and they live with the constant threat of being buried alive. Workers continue to take these risks day after day, because there is no other source of income. Many of the gold miners are children whose families can’t afford to send them to school. Some gold is panned on the surface, but a lot has to be extracted from underground. To do that, prospectors dive into narrow, mud-filled shafts, uses snorkelling masks and long tubes too breathe. If the mine collapses, they have no chance of escape. They have a saying here, ‘while you’re down the mine, you have one foot in the grave’. Several miners have already died that way, others from respiratory diseases caused by inhaling mercury fumes. The toxic metal is used in gold extraction with no safety precautions, so it poisons the air, the ground and the water, causing long-term harm to the whole community. Another danger to the inhabitants of Paracale comes from disused mines, abandoned and left open, waiting for unsuspecting victims to fall in. The business takes its toll on workers, their families and the community. They have been known to demonstrate, demanding safer working conditions, better pay and other job opportunities, but change is slow. Meanwhile, extreme poverty among people who produce one of the world’s most precious metals leaves them no option but to continue with this pitiless occupation. You can find a link to their material here: https://www.facebook.com/Gold-Country-Explorers-850167371691275/ To see one of those monster Fairbanks-Morse stationary engines running (and it is worth seeing), check out the great video at the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_0xifuTqVA An early (1800s) California State Mining Bureau report had this to say about the mill at the site: “A 20-stamp mill was located on the east side of the creek, with 900-pound stamps driven by a Knight wheel under 94’ of head from a 1,650’ long ditch; only one battery of stamps was reported as being in running order.” A later report (1900s) adds these additional details about the mill: “The mill at this time is described as possessing a 50-ton daily capacity, with a jaw crusher, 10 stamps, and ball mill in closed circuit with a Dorr classifier. Riffles were set below the stamps, and amalgamation plates below the ball mill. Three Fagergren flotation cells were followed by two Kraut cleaner-cells. A 200-hp diesel engine drove a generator to supply electric power, and a 440 cfm compressor was driven by a 100-hp motor.” Now, you may notice a discrepancy here as the first description mentions twenty stamps and the second description mentions ten stamps. As you saw in the video, the ruins of the mill at the mine site now has ten stamps. So, does that mean that an earlier mill was torn down and replaced by a new mill? Possibly. However, in the picture in the video, which was taken in 1937, a flume can be clearly seen leading toward the mill. Presumably, it was still being used when the photograph was taken because it appears to be maintained and in good condition. So, perhaps the mill was remodeled or rehabbed and ten stamps were taken away? The first report mentions that only one battery was in working order… In further support of this idea is the manufacturer’s stamp on the stamp mill itself. Union Iron Works of San Francisco ceased to be an independent company in 1902 when it was absorbed into a conglomerate called the United States Shipbuilding Company. This, therefore, dates the stamp mill to the time of the original report and would seem to suggest that it is the same mill. The last records of work being done at this mine date to 1939. You can perhaps better understand how everything is laid out at this abandoned gold mine by knowing that I did not backtrack or meander at all during the video, but continued in a steady downstream direction. So, the order in which objects of interest appear in the video are the order in which they are laid out across this sprawling site. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring
